Many bloggers have found that today’s task is one of the more important for finding blogging success.
Pitch a Guest Post for Another Blog
For today’s platform-building task, pitch a guest blog post to another blogger. Writing guest posts is an incredible way to improve your exposure and expertise on a subject, while also making a deeper connection with the blogger who is hosting your guest post. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
You can pitch a guest post to about any blog you enjoy. If you wish to pitch this one, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line: There Are No Rules Pitch. But you’ll find the most success by pitching guest posts for blogs that already target your specific target audience.
But how do I pitch a guest post?
After you know where you want to guest post, here are some tips for pitching your guest blog post:
- Let the blogger know you’re familiar with the blog. You should accomplish this in one sentence (two sentences max) and be specific. For instance, a There Are No Rules reader could say, “I’ve really been enjoying your October Platform Challenge.” It’s as simple as that. It lets me know you’re not a spammer and that you have an idea of what the blog covers.
- Propose an idea or two. Each idea should have its own concise paragraph. This makes it easy for the blogger to understand where one pitch ends, and the other begins. You want to be specific, but don’t lay out every single detail. If the blogger is interested, he or she will ask for more information.
- Share a little about yourself. Emphasis on “a little.” If you have previous experience/expertise, include it. If you don’t, just skip this part.
- Include your information. When you close the pitch, include your name, e-mail, blog (or website) URL, and other contact information you feel comfortable sharing. There’s nothing more awkward for me than to have a great pitch that doesn’t include the person’s name. Or a way to learn more about the person pitching me.

First off, congratulations! This is a great opportunity to show off your writing skills and connect with a new audience.
Here’s how to take advantage of your guest post assignment:
- Write an exceptional post. Don’t hold back your best stuff. Write a post that will make people want to find more of your writing.
- Turn in you post on deadline. If there’s a deadline, hit it. If there’s not a deadline, try to turn around the well-written post in a timely manner.
- Promote the guest post. Once your guest post has gone live, promote it as much as you would promote a post to your own blog (maybe even a little more).
