    To start a blog, go to or and set one up. No knowledge of html is required. As someone else said, the only way to start is to start. It will evolve with time.

    Lee is already famous, so don’t expect 68 visitors on your first day. I actually have numerous blogs. It’s a way that I test myself to see what I have the passion to write. If you look at my list of blogs and see which one has 300+ posts, it’s pretty obvious. That blog gets about 100 visitors a day, and each post gets several comments. The other blogs don’t have very many posts or readers. If they get 2 or 3 readers a day, that’s great.

    If you search Jane’s archives, you’ll find links to articles about how to build blog readership. I’ve used many of the suggestions and double readership over December.

    Blogging is a fantastic means of platform building. I started my blog in January 2008 and received a meager 68 visitors on the first day. As of last week I’ve received over seven million visits from readers. The blog has also increased the number of hits to my website. And, as a result of the blog, I’ve received numerous invitations to speak for various events.

    I believe having the blog has probably helped my WD book sales, too. Jane would know more about those figures than I do at the moment.

    Jane: thanks for a great presentation today. I learned alot, and what you said will help me on my proposal on Martin Caidin that you critiqued.

    Some advice on blogs for Susan. Just start. I dithered about and then started one over a year ago called BrandlandUSA, but wish I had done it sooner. I actually did it at the time I started thinking about a nonfiction book on branding and brand names, to see if there was an audience for my work

    …there is a new book out on blogging by Arianna Huffington. While some might not like her politics, she has interesting things to say about the world of blogs. Her main idea is "first thought, best thought" and if you do that, the response or non response to the posted material will begin to determine the follow ups.

    I would think some of those 1,000 word essays, chopped into bits (well not the chocolate one!) could be a basis for a blog. Blogspot is easy to set up in minutes, and that will get you started.

    Jane, Jane, Jane
    Your picture indicates that you are just as young as your voice seemed to indicate on today’s webinar. On the one hand, it makes me proud that someone with your exceptional knowledge of this competitive field could be my daughter. On the other hand, it makes me well, sad. Anyhoo.
    You indicated today that blogging and/or creating a website to discuss my … uh, area of interest (rather than starting with the book) is likely the best route. So,how do I "start" a blog? Does it need to be focussed, or can I start with say, "ponderings"? My book idea was, unfortunately, one of those memoir/self-help hybrids… While I know Memoir is not the appropriate genre for the topic right now (it would end up being a sobbing rant, I know), I am not sure a self-help on this topic would actually "help" anyone. (How to NOT marry a drug addict and NOT get sucked into the deep vortex of HIS darkness? hmmmm). Hence the need, as you suggested, for a blog, to "create waves" and get a feel for the audience(s), and even really, to figure out what it is that I want to write about. In short, I want to learn the how to and where of blogging. I have absolutely no shortage of ideas, likely aimed at 40ish-woman-mother-student-goddess-doormat types. I also have a growing file of 1000-wd essays on everything from pretty-wine-label philosophy to chocolate penis envy to (s)mothering teenagers… Please, Jane, help me blog.
