5 Things That Make Me Stop Reading Websites & Blogs

Just in case you missed it, my first contribution to Writer Unboxed went live last week:

5 Things That Make Me Stop Reading Websites & Blogs

It’s generated a lot of excellent discussion (45 comments!), where I’ve contributed some additional tips and answered questions. I think the discussion also made me aware of the sixth thing that makes me stop reading sites (at least this time of year): falling snow. For this, I have to give credit to Edie for mentioning.

I’ve heard from many of you on Twitter that you’ve made changes to your site now (particularly eliminating black backgrounds), which I applaud! Your readers will thank you.

P.S. I’ve started actively blogging about recent travels, personal reading, and other things TBD at the freshly rebuilt JaneFriedman.com.

I love Writer Unboxed, congratulations on your arrival there! Great article, too. I used to prefer black backgrounds but as I’ve gotten older, it’s become more unattractive to me. Perhaps it’s because of my internal shifting from painter to writer but I no longer find it appealing to the eyes. As for overall web design, unfortunately there are many pages with excellent content but horrific web design. As a graphic artist by day, I have to shake my head at what people find presentable for their audiences. With everything else, presentation is key to keeping an audience at attention! My best regards to your future blogging at Writer Unboxed!
