The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library opens in Indianapolis

The last time I was ready to set out for Indianapolis on a literary pilgrimage, I’d charted a course to my alma mater, Butler University, to see one of my favorite writers of all time speak—Kurt Vonnegut Jr. After a brief Indiana sighting and a failed attempt to catch him at the ACLU’s annual event a few years earlier, I had wrangled a ticket, and everything was set—except Mr. Vonnegut passed away a few short weeks before the speech in 2007.

And thus I found myself on another voyage Saturday, visions of Bokonon and Tralfamadorians dancing in my head, driving back to the author’s Indianapolis hometown for the grand opening of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library.

Located downtown at 340 N. Senate Ave., the intimate nonprofit features an array of Vonnegut’s history and personal effects. On display: His typewriter. His purple heart. Numerous photos. His art. His legendary Pall Malls. His reading glasses. Everything is also supplemented by a smattering of moments from Vonnegut’s life, including a vast wall-spanning time line. (And of course, there’s a gift shop area offering everything from books to mousepads to bags to mugs to hats.)

Look for more on the library in the May/June issue of Writer’s Digest, and hopefully something special on Vonnegut’s writing (pending the results of a phone call I’m about to make). And better yet, if you want to drop by the library in person, it’s free and open 12-5 p.m. every day except Wednesday.

Here’s to you, Mr. Vonnegut. A Vonnegut-infused Promptly prompt series follows.

  6. Bill Luxurious

The fan letter came much too late. It wasn’t good news…

Kilmet clutched the letter against his chest and tried to muster a tear for his sadness.

If the postal system was worth a damn the letter would have been delivered nearly five years before. Kilmet would have been stationed in Cincinnati at a Military Distribution Center, where he was in charge of writing instructions for the RRA lemon grenades:

1.Hold in right hand, with thumb on safety lever
2.Pull safety pin with index finger of left hand
    3.Throw at enemy
    4.Take cover

Kilmet had added the “Take cover” step and was promptly regarded as a writing genius (What imagination this child has!) Kilmet was a first cousin to Georgy Zhukov. Supreme Commander Georgy Zhukov shared his title with the man who had given it to him, Joseph Stalin.

It was a reward for his successful negotiations with President Dwight D. Eisenhower for the surrender of the United States in 1954. Georgy made friends with Dwight after the fall of Nazi Germany. The fall of the US became imminent when Dwight became utterly infatuated with Georgy.

Kilmet enjoyed the easy street that led him into the non-military complex and placed him in Cincinnati. He met his wife there and planned to have two boys.

After his Magnum Opus Instruction Manual, it was decided, along with special encouragement of Supreme Commander Georgy Zhukov, he would become the Minister of Editors in the newly established Ministry of Edits. Truthfully this high position was usually reserved for loyal generals who had lost their blood lust. Kilmet became the youngest Minister in the history of the Russian Republic of America at the age of twenty-nine.

Kilmet operated the Ministry of Edit with many “writers” from the former USA, including myself who was very content to shut off the endless stream of word garbage that was necessary to make a living as a sports reporter. Another was a fictional writer named Kilgore Trout, who was invented by Kurt Vonnegut. Trout was special to Kilmet. Trout churned out twelve times the work at a sixteenth of the effectiveness. Trout’s verbose reports of corn statistics told rather of desperate corn families enduring another holocaust. Trout’s words changed Kilmet into lover of the arts.

Willem Lujchevski had written Kilmet while he was in military school at age fourteen. His assignment was to write to a non-military officer and feign interest in a non-military life. Non-military meant that you would not take someone’s life. Everyone one in the RRA was an officer. All officers started training at age twelve.

Kilmet missed the mockery of the assignment instead focused on the words of young Willem. He thought of how this young man could be the next Kilgore Trout with enough training. He could write under a sterling American name like Bill Luxurious. The letter’s timing had caused this boy’s life to likely have him taking someone’s life or even worse, someone taking his.

We were “so in love”. We were “a model for the little people.”

That’s what they liked to tell us, the ones who wished they were us. The ones who didn’t realize.

Andrew and I, we were more than in love. We were forces of nature. We were the stars and the moon. We were heaven and earth. We were the world. We were complete. Andrew was me; I was Andrew. There was nothing else to say.

I met him in graduate school, when I was twenty-five and he had come back to school at thirty. He thought I was spunky; I thought he was stupid He asked for my number the first day of class; I never picked up when he called. On the last day, I asked for his, and from that day, neither of us could survive without our late-night conversations.

The first time he told me he loved me, we were at his apartment and he was making me hot chocolate. It was a Thursday night and we both had class the next morning, but I couldn’t bring myself to leave him. His brother had just died, and my mother had just been diagnosed with cancer.

“Promise me,” he told me, “promise me something I’ve never asked you before.”

“Anything,” I said, because I thought I was the heroine of a romance novel.

“Promise me you’ll never love me as much as I love you,” he said.

    “I – I – ”

    “You said anything.”

He was right. I said I would promise anything. He knew that I would never go back on my word. I frowned at him. “Why?”

“If anything goes wrong, if my brain shuts down and I can’t love you, then you’ll have no trouble moving on.”

    “Andrew…”

    “Promise me.”

    “I promise.”

    “Thank you. Now…please, marry me.”

That was it. We got engaged and married two summers later. He has never let me love him like I want to. I have begged him, pleaded with him, but he has total control of my heart, and whenever the feeling gets too deep, he squeezes. And then somehow I love him less.

But I have always known that there is no way the feeling he has for me is anything bigger than the feeling I have for him.

I got cancer when I was seventy-two. I was much older than my mother, but I was still too young – at least Andrew thought I was.

It was May twenty-third when I asked him to hold my hand because it was ending. “I have to admit something.”

Immediate fear entered his eyes. “What is it?”

“On judgment day, when they ask me what I did down here, I’m going to have to tell them, ‘There was a promise I made forty-five years ago to the man I love, and I broke it all the time.’”

Tears dripped down my husband’s nose, and he leaned his head into my shoulder. “God, I love you.”

    “Andrew, I love you more.”
