Meet the Poets of Poetic Asides

Recently, I was approached by Poetic Asides regulars Jane Shlensky and Nancy Posey about the possibility of Tammy and I heading up to Hickory, North Carolina, for a special poetry event that would try to bring together many of the Poetic Asides poets who’ve toiled on the blog–some for years and others who are still very new.

(UPDATE: Nancy sent along a link with hotel information. Click to continue.)

Anyway: I said, “Heck yeah. We’d love to.” (Or something to that effect.)

Jane and Nancy have since started planning a poetic gathering of friends in Hickory on September 18-19, 2015, at the Hickory Museum of the Arts.

As they put it in their flyer: “We have admired their words and befriended them virtually. Now we can meet them in the foothills of the Appalachians to celebrate poetry. Workshops, open mics, jam sessions, ekphrastic inspiration, and more.”

Jane and Nancy promise to provide more information about transportation, housing, and dining (as well as optional day trips to Asheville and Blowing Rock), but they want any interested poets to save the date and start planning now. And yes, please spread the word!

If you have any direct questions, please send them to Nancy Posey or Jane Shlensky (just click their names for their e-mail addresses).

I’m also coming to this post late, but want to chime in and say this is a terrific idea. Due to other travel commitments, I doubt I can make it to Hickory in September this year (darn!), though I dearly wish I could. You’ll have fun, I’m sure!

Signing in lateish on this page but my spouse and I are coming from western Canada … and I did hear the dates are correct as Robert has them … 18 – 19 Sept. (even though the Save the Date poster says otherwise)

  3. Jane Shlensky

Thanks so much, Robert, for helping us spread the word. The folks at PA (and also at Marie and Walt’s blogs) have become like family, always encouraging and inspiring one another, the comments like little hugs. Wouldn’t it be a kick to put faces on those hugs? Like Nancy, I wouldn’t mind if it became a movable feast.

Sounds like a wonderful idea! It would be a bit of a trek for me from NJ but maybe I can make it a vacation with the missus, like when I went to Billy Collins’ workshop in Key West last winter. We’ve been to the Asheville area (years ago) and loved it. Don’t pencil me in just yet, but I will definitely keep it in mind.

William, the flyer had the dates wrong. The actual event if Friday-Saturday. We are gathering details for anyone who would like to come early or stay late to visit Asheville (Biltmore Estate, Grove Park Inn, great downtown dining and shops) or Blowing Rock (another lovely mountain artist community).

All, we are so hopeful to have a crowd for the weekend and look forward to hosting you. Who knows? Maybe you’ll want to have the next one in YOUR neck of the woods!
