Tunesday Volume 1 — Winners Announced & Answers Revealed

So the first volume of Tunesday is officially a wrap. Thanks to all who listened and participated. The concept was simple: I play 15 guitar riffs, and the person who names the most riffs correctly wins cool writing stuff. Volume 2 of Tunesday is set to go live within a day or so — so pay attention to the blog.

THE WINNERS:

Yes, I said winners with an S. That’s because the rules have changed, and there’s more ways to win. CHANGE IN RULES: The rules clearly state what prizes await the winner and how the winner is chosen. But I’m adding more winners. If you’re not the winner but your entry guessed 2/3 or more of the riffs correctly, you got entered into a drawing for a free WD book. So note this change in rules moving forward if you found yourself figuring out several riffs but then giving up.

Grand prize winner: An awesome dude named Michael Seese. He was the only one to get all 15. For his riff-recognizing prowess, he gets a critique from me, an interview on the WD system of blogs (forthcoming), and a one-year subscription to WritersMarket.com. (Michael cannot win any further editions of Tunesday, and that is good news for other entrants because the man seems like quite the guitar riff genius. Congrats, Michael!)

Secondary winner: Sheila T. She had 13 correct, and was one of many eligible for the secondary raffle prize. Congrats, Sheila! She wins the free resource, BOOK IN A MONTH.

THE 15 ANSWERS:

1. “Owner of a Broken Heart” by Yes

2. “Talk Dirty to Me” by Poison

3. “Cat Scratch Fever” by Ted Nugent.

4.”Machinehead” by Bush

5. “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield

6. “The Bleeding” by Five Finger Death Punch

I didn’t know it when I played this riff, but it turns out that this one would be the most difficult one to name correctly. That makes sense. It’s a newer song — more metal than rock. Very tough.

7. “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga

Only about 35% of entries got this answer right. I guess hearing a keyboard riff on guitar threw some people. LOTS of people thought this riff was “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” by Van Halen. In fact, when people seemed to blank on any of the riffs, their default guess was Van Halen, Ozzy, or Metallica.

8. “Hey Jealousy” by The Gin Blossoms

9. “I Love Rock and Roll” by Joan Jett

10. “Thunder Kiss 65″ by White Zombie

Most entries got this, but plenty of people guessed “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin.

11. “Fell on Black Days” by Soundgarden

12. “Leave Me Out” by Silverchair

I considered this the hardest one (but it turns out #6 was). Only about 20% of entries got this right. I consider that to be outstanding because this is the only riff on the list that was never a single.

13. “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath

14. “Hammer to Fall” by Queen

I’m surprised more people didn’t get this one. I thought that any Queen song would be easy to ID, but I guess the fact is that Queen is just not associated with guitar riffs. Only about 40% of entries got this answer right.

15. “Connection by Elastica

And on the flipside … I was very surprised so many people got this answer correct! I thought this would be a real screwball, but evidently people love them some Elastica. About 60% of entries got this answer right.

Congrats to the winner and all who participated! Volume 2 coming within days…
