Looking for an Old-School Rap Song Suggestion for a Cover Band Medley

Categories: Cover Band Venting.
So my cover band is putting together an “Old School Rap Medley” to feature older rap from the late 80s and early 90s – mostly songs that were fairly bad yet incredibly popular.  Songs that you would diss in public, but you know you could recite all the words to them if there was a money bet on the line.

WELL … we have four songs picked and need a fifth.  That’s where you come in.

1. “It’s Tricky” by Run DMC
2. “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer
3. “Ice ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice
4. “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot
5 . _________________________ ?

Give me some suggestions!

By the way, thanks for your comments on my last cover band question: Should we play “Jack & Diane” or “Hurts So Good”?  The latter was the clear winner and the one I was leaning toward anyway.

The Grass Man, LLC says C&C "Everybody Dance Now"–C&C Music Factory
It doesnt get any better than lyrics like "I’m just a squirrel tryin’ to get a nut to move your butt to the dance floor"? Classic right there…..

If anything just for the lyrics alone….

    Just my 2 cents…..

  2. I think you need a bit more of a story with this as this isn’t really a news story in its current form. Perhaps you could write about why you like Michael so much?

  3. Excuse me. The roses, the lovely notes, the dining and dancing are all welcome and splendid. But when the Godiva is gone, the gift of real love is having someone who’ll go the distance with you. Someone who, when the wedding day limo breaks down, is willing to share a seat on the bus.
I am from Armenia and now teach English, give true I wrote the following sentence: "A comprehensive search engine optimization game plan.We can handle all aspects of your website."

    With love :-(, Ryba.

  4. "Can’t Touch This" by MC Hammer it’s cool!

  5. PJ Morrone says:

Very informative. Hopefully my own site/blog will help someone who is interested in writing for fun or publication.

  6. It’s probably much too late, but I had to throw another one out there…

    "Regulator" by Warren G.

  7. Tara Betts says:

"Push It" by Salt ‘n’ Pepa

  8. Annie says:

    The Gas Face…by Third Base

  9. Jessica says:

Definitely "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-lot. I used to know all the words to that one.

  10. Dimitri Kyser says:

    "Radio" by LL Cool J
"Bust A Move" by Young MC
"Funky Cold Medina or Wild Thang" Tone Loc
"You Say He’s Just a Friend" Biz Marke** My favorite.

  11. Terrie says:

"Push It" by Salt & Pepa
"Y’all Gonna Make Me Lose My Mind" by DMX
"Walk This Way" by Run DMC/Aerosmith
But my favorite is "It Takes Two" by Rob Base

  12. Scott says:

How about The Show by Doug E. Fresh? (Excuse me Doug E. Fresh, you’re on.)

  13. Rebecca Thrower says:

Also, as something of an Old School aficionado-you might take a listen to LIL TROY’S "WANNA BE A BALLER" or GHETO BOYS "MY MIND IS PLAYING TRICKS ON ME"….perhaps a little less fun-but on the same level as "THE MESSAGE" by GRANDMASTER FLASH.

  14. Rebecca Thrower says:

Wow! You’re truly a man of many talents! One of my personal favorites-with a really frenetic beat is "FLY GIRL" by the fabulous BOOGIE BOYS (1985). It’s an underground party favorite-and can be AMPED UP HARD ROCK STYLE.

  15. Crystal says:

How about "Parents Just Don’t Understand" by the vFresh Prince (aka Will Smith) & DJ Jazzy Jeff

  16. VanessaW says:

What about bringing in some women with a bit of TLC or even better,

"Let’s Talk about Sex" by Salt N Pepa.

  17. Laura says:

How ’bout some REALLY old school? Grand Master Flash’s "The Message." There’s also "Apache" by the Sugar Hill Gang.

"Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot.

  18. Harris Bloom says:

Given your "taste" in rap, I’d say your fifth should be "You Gotta Fight For Your Fight (To Party)" – even though that’s like the nine best song on License to Ill.

  19. Wilhem.spihntingle says:

    "The Humpty Dance"

  20. LORI says:

  21. Chuck says:

I think it’s a close race between "Wild Thing" by Tone Loc, and "Rappers Delight"

  22. Tom Typinski says:

"wash your face in my sink"’ by the Dream Warriors

  23. Linley says:

    "It Takes Two"–Rob Base
    Everyone knows this one!

    "Everybody Dance Now"–C&C Music Factory
How can you beat lyrics like "I’m just a squirrel tryin’ to get a nut to move your butt to the dance floor"? It’s genius.

  24. Angie says:

Bust a Move by Young MC. Classic!

  25. Wendy says:

    Jump Around by Cypress Hill

Or what was that one by those little kids who wore their clothes backwards?

  26. Jenna says:

Oh, or Just a Friend by Biz Markie

  27. Jenna says:

Great picks! I wish I could be there.

    What about…
The Humpty Dance by Digital Underground
2 Legit 2 Quit by Hammer

  28. Kelly Fiore says:

I have to say I am partial to Poison by Bel Biv Devo (sp?) and OPP by Naughty By Nature.

  29. Martha Flynn says:

I have to put I’m Gonna Knock You Out by LL Cool J out there, too.

  30. Skott Klebe says:

To go with the rest of this set, the only possible answer is Tone Loc’s Wild Thing.
While I sympathize with the Rapper’s Delight recommendation, I think that it’s a bit of a deep cut. :)

  31. Bradley Robb says:

    Rappers Delight or the Jungle.

Or, to keep with the general theme of the 3 prior tracks – bad 90s dance rap – Whump (There it is).

  32. Melanie says:

Wild Thing by Tone-Loc. That’s your perfect fifth. Or Funky Cold Medina.

  33. Parish says:

    rappers delight

  34. beth says:

How about Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight?
