Important Update Regarding the 79th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition

Julie L. Moran wins 79th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition

Fiction writers must juggle worlds: They build the world the character sees and the world the reader see—all the while, the writer has an understanding of what’s real and true. When these created perspectives collide with reality, the writer must time the character’s and reader’s epiphanies perfectly. It won’t do if the reader realizes everything miles before the character, or if the character is enlightened and the reader is left in the weeds.

Julie L. Moran mastered this timing perfectly in her short story “Lunch With Debbie,” which beat out more than 12,300 entries across 10 categories to take the grand prize in the 79th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition. The story centers on a poignant moment for a grieving mother, Jolene. Readers see the world right along with Jolene, filtering the world through her. And once her perception changes, so does the reader’s. This masterfully coordinated epiphany reveals a mother’s capacity for love, sadness, denial, and hope.

Moran is a full-time writer and former lawyer who lives in California. She has a Master’s of Professional Writing degree from the University of Southern California. She’s written adult fiction (both mainstream and mystery), as well as non-fiction articles and books. She’s currently working on a young adult mystery novel.
